Still Alive

Despite that my cats, having planned my demise if I didn't meet their demands, I am STILL ALIVE!
Maybe they realized I am the nice lady who feeds them. Maybe they realized I pay the rent, so they can continue to live in luxery. Who knows?--maybe they realized they (dare I say it?!!?) ... love me. (gasp!)

It could happen.

Max.

Max. He was about 16 years old, give or take a year. Happy to the end.
I will always remember him as being the second smartest dog I ever knew. (Sammy was the first -- and if you look back into the archives, you will learn about him.)
In his youth, I used to take him on long walks in the woods around the reservoir. He could go off leash run. He couldn't wait to get in the water! He loved to swim. On one trip, he saw a deer, and ran off to chase it. I didn't know where he went, and he gave me a few grey hairs worrying....but back he came.

He loved to play ball. Even in his old age, when his back legs could barely hold him up, he still wanted to play ball.
I was doing a job for Max when the Who's bassist, John Entwistle, died. I had MTV on, and they were doing a Who retrospective. "PinBALL Wizard" came on, and as I singing along, I look down to Max. He was standing there with his ball in his mouth, ready to play. I can't refuse his request.

Max was surrounded by love when he crossed over to the rainbow bridge today. I'm sure he is making new friends and someone is throwing the ball for him.

new portrait

Recently, I met an art student, and commisioned him to do a portrait of my three cats. I think Max likes it. I certainly do.

Max, Before and After

Max, before his summer haircut.

Max, after his summer haircut.

How come I don't look younger and skinnier after my haircut?

Happy Adoption Days

A year and a half ago, I adopted Max after the death of my precious fur baby, Aunt Sue. I saw Max on MyYahoo, looking for a home. He was in NJ. I figured being on Yahoo with that face, he must have had dozens of people applying to adopt him. But I was the lucky one.
Some friends offered to drive me to Jersey, where we met with the adoption agency halfway, in the Ikea parking lot, under the big green letter J. It was like a drug deal: i traded an envelope of money for a big fat orange tabby. Maybe it was more like paying a ransome. At any rate, I cried when I saw him. He reminded me of Aunt Sue, the best orange tabby ever! (At least on this side of the Mississippi).
I was planning on picking him up alone, but i am glad I got the ride, so I could share this happy day with some very good human friends, and spend more time bonding with my new son.

Yesterday I went with a client to pick up her new fur baby, Molly. About a month and a half ago, she lost her wheaton terrier, Baily, unexpectantly. (read about Baily in a prior posting). It was a very happy day. For the first time I got to share the happiness with a client. Too often i had accompanied them to vets to put their babies down, or to the crematorium for final rights. I am tired of crying in saddness. Yesterday I joined the new proud mom in tears of joy.

Long live Max, and Long Live Molly!
